My boys and I build square foot gardens last spring that served our family well during this last year. When ever there are tools involved, my kids all want to help.

It may sound crazy, but my 4 year old son was a big help with installing new hardwood flooring. He’d bring boards over, helps tap them into place, and many other tasks. We haven’t tackled anything like a bird feeder together yet, but we love watching the birds out back, so I’m sure he’d love building one!

My father is a contracter and growing up I spent a lot of time with him working on things from putting on roofs, taking off roofs, cleaning taking off nails, lifting plywood up to him, and so much more. Because of my father I now have a huge appreciation for craftsmanship and quality. Now that I am going to search for a new home I can immediately point out the limitations and bad workmanship of the homes.

For me I want to share working with tools with my daughter. She’ll be the girl on the floor at college who can fix anything like my sister was. We all got toolboxes before we went to colelge and were the mr and mrs fix-its of our floors. We owe that to my Dad.

I try everyday to build/fix/create things with my kids. Whether it’s legos, fixing things around the house or just creating things with wood, we have a great time together. My son would think this tool set would be especially wonderful as he always wants to play with my tools!

Check out my post, “Time Out for a Chopstick!” http://timeoutdad.com/?p=883 The post involved fixing the plumbing which involved my dad, my 4 year old, and myself. What a saga it was!

From my dad, I learned by watching him try to fix things all over the house during my childhood. I’ve inherited the need to buy all kinds of tools and to try to build and fix whatever I can around the apartment. I think my 4 year old is already picking up some skills. This RED Toolbox sounds great! Could have used it when I destroyed the sink with a chopstick! Also sounds great for building, as well as fixing!

One of the projects that I have enjoyed thus far was the pinewood derby cars that my eldest daughter and I built last year. Not that they did remotely well, but it was the process of working together to build something that we both could be proud of. I know she loves to work on things together and this giveaway would be another way to facilitate such engagement!

I’ve never been much of a builder or fixer-upper. I get that inability from my father. Once, he and I built a wheelbarrow, which basically involved just screwing on the handles and the bottom. Even that we messed up, assembling the entire thing backwards. My kids can already do more than me and would love a new toolbox to help mom (er, I mean dad) fix and build new things. Thanks!
