Complexions Contemporary Ballet combines artistry and athleticism in New York City through March 3rd!

Visiting The Joyce Theater in New York City is a must for every dance fan. This Chelsea theater has been hosting some of the most renowned dance companies for decades, and its intimate 472-seat house offers every visitor an amazing view to take in epic dance artistry.

Now through March 3, catch Complexions Contemporary Ballet, offering a selection of three rotating programs (visit the Joyce website for a calendar of performances).

I experienced Program A, a combination of Bach 25 and Star Dust, which is the first installment of a full evening-length Ballet tribute to David Bowie. Both pieces were breathtaking and demonstrated the artistry and sheer power and strength of the performers.

Bach 25 is in its NYC premiere during this run at the Joyce. Dancers are clad in neutral hues and perform to the music of Johann Sebastian Bach and Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. Partner, group and solo work were beautifully executed in the seamless transition between songs.

After intermission, those neutral hues are exchanged for glitter makeup and bright, bold hues, where the dancers perform to some of Bowie’s greatest hits, including Lazarus, Changes, Life on Mars, Space Oddity, 1984, Heroes, Modern Love, Rock and Roll Suidice and The Young Americans. During each song, a dancer took the lead and lip synced to the tune, while others brought the sounds of David Bowie’s creativity to life on stage. This piece was truly electrifying and one of the most exciting ballet works I have ever seen! Dancers commanded the stage with striking, powerful moves to this moving music.

The lighting was beautifully executed in both pieces, and really drew you in to the magic taking place on the stage.
