As you may know by now, I’m expecting my second child in January – a baby girl! I’m trying really hard to resist my shopping temptations. Before I introduce more stuff into our house, I’m focusing on organizing our two bedroom apartment to make room for her AND her wardrobe.
When Carter’s recently invited me to take a peak at their collection, I jumped at the chance. I also learned some things that I wish I knew when I was buying clothes for my first baby.
Did you know that Carter’s set the standard in baby clothes sizing? What was a new insight for me is to not go by the months, but to look at the length and weights associated with the months – duh. I had WAY too many newborn or NB sizes for my first baby – he grew out of those by week three!
Here’s a great tip for first-time moms: hold off on buying clothes (if you can) because height and weight will determine your baby’s clothing size – not the months. For example, three months sizes are for babies eight to 12.5 pounds and 21-24 inches in length – that is close to standard measurements for most newborns, so buying three or six month sizes for new babies could be practical. If you are registering for a baby shower, go for three to six month sizes – it’s a safer bet that it will fit your baby for longer.
The great thing about Carter’s is that there are 15,000 locations to buy – and exchange – clothes as well as an improved online store that has both Carter’s and OshKosh B’Gosh brands that link to one shopping cart. I also really love the price of Carter’s – you can get outfits for $10! When you are looking at several costume changes each day for your baby, that makes having a lot of inventory very affordable.
I also adore the sweet styles of Carter’s. Their guiding principle is to “Celebrate Childhood” – a theme that really resonates with me. I don’t like clothes that look like miniature adult wear – I believe babies should be dressed like babies.
Also on Carters.com is the layette guide (PDF), which is great for first-time mom buying.
It goes without saying that Carters is a brand that moms love and trust. I’m off to pick out a few cutie patootie outfits.
From now until April, you can get 20% of your purchase of $50 or more. Use code: BabyLove.
