In 2007, one Mom took an ordinary fundraising activity and turned it into something remarkable. After her son Liam was diagnosed with cancer at the age of two, Gretchen Witt decided to raise money for pediatric cancer research by hosting a bake sale. Although more children in the U.S. die from pediatric cancer than any other disease, a serious lack of funding impedes scientists and doctors from pursuing further research and developing treatment options.

With help from her husband and friends, Gretchen baked 96,000 cookies and raised $400,000 dollars in three weeks. Following the success of the first sale, the Witts began receiving inquires from people from all over the country asking how they could help. In response, she founded the non-profit organization Cookies for Kids’ Cancer. Now, people from all over the country can sign up to host their own bake sale in support of pediatric cancer research. Those who can't bake have shown their support nonetheless by running in marathons, holding tag sales, organizing golf tournaments, collecting spare change, and hosting car washes to support the cause.

This May, Cookies for Kids’ Cancer plans on hosting a record number of bake sales and the Glad Products Company will match all bake sale proceeds up to $225,000. You can help the charity reach their goal by signing up to host a bake sale of your own. Every cookie counts! Sign up at http://register.cookiesforkidscancer.org/ and also browse the website to find other ways to get involved.

One Mom Central reader will win a Bake Sale Kit including an OXO mixing bowl, two spatulas, a cookie scoop, Williams-Sonoma cookie cutters and cooling rack, a Maxi-Aid No Touch baking sheet and a Silpat non-stick baking mat to help her with her next baking project.
