Dig into a bowl of Puppy Chow

For some fun and deliciousness, I like to make a peanut butter chocolaty goodness known by a variety names. Some call it muddy buddies, chum, or reindeer poop, but in our home it’s known as puppy chow.

I have used this dessert for plenty of “Secret Sister” gifts for sporting events, a quick snack to make with friends, or a nice college package for my sister. The simple ingredients and easy preparation make it a great recipe to prepare with kids…fighting over who gets to lick the peanut butter spoon may be the most difficult part.

Enjoy the recipe below, and for added goodness, throw the finished product in the fridge for a half hour… if you can wait that long.

Puppy Chow

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup peanut butter
  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  • ¼ cup or 1 stick butter
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla
  • 8 cups Chex cereal (Rice Chex preferred)
  • 1½ cups powdered sugar

Directions:

  1. Melt ½ cup peanut butter together with the 1 cup chocolate chips in a microwave safe bowl.
  2. Melt ¼ cup butter and add it to the peanut butter and chocolate mixture. Add the ½ teaspoon of vanilla to this mixture.
  3. Put 8 cups of Chex cereal in a bowl.
  4. Pour the chocolate/peanut butter/butter mixture over the Chex cereal and coat everything thoroughly.
  5. Pour the 1½ cups powdered sugar into a large plastic bag.
  6. Add the coated Chex mix to the bag, close the top, and start shaking. If you’re feeling ambitious, you may want to throw some dance moves in just to make sure every Chex piece is thoroughly coated with powdered sugar.
  7. Enjoy!
