Meal planning. It’s always such a good idea in theory! I simply hate wasting food, so try to be very methodical about what I purchase and what I use during the week to avoid wastefulness as well as over-spending on groceries.

Despite best efforts, there always seems to be the inevitable interruption that can prevent me from using up all the fresh produce, or finishing dry foods before they start to lose their freshness. According to a survey conducted by Vacuvita, the average family has to throw out 1300 pounds of food each year due to spoilage.

Fortunately, I have discovered what just may be the fountain of youth for your groceries – the Vacuvita Storage System!

Vacuvita is a new kitchen innovation that is easy to use, helps you save money, and even improves your cooking technique! It’s a countertop vacuum sealing system that helps store foods, increasing shelf life for both dry foods as well as perishables, while helping foods retain their natural flavors longer.

Homebase Set Blue[1]The system begins with the Vacuvita Home Base. This product will equip your kitchen with a multitude of vacuum storage possibilities. This well engineered vacuum storage system will keep your food safe from oxygen, moisture and other factors that negatively affecting its shelf life. You can keep your snacks crispy and keep your home baked goods from drying out. Use the Home Base to store English muffins, breads, nuts, and coffee beans. You’ll also use it to serve as the vacuum source when using vacuum bags and storage containers. Keep Home Base plugged in, in case your air pressure needs to be adjusted.

Be sure to heed the tip of keeping dry foods separate from fruits and vegetables. I made the mistake of putting my bananas in the Home Base with the dry food. The mixture of textures upset the balance and was not ideal for the dry foods. Just use one of the containers for fruit, which are available in a number of convenient sizes. It’s recommended to seal fruits where you don’t eat the peel.

The Vacuvita mobile app allows you to easily scan the QR code of your containers, and gives you an accurate idea of how longVacuum-Storage-Complete-Container-Package-Green-Vacuvita your food will be preserved within them. There is a see-through window so you won’t forget what’s in each container when sealed. Make sure to get a good grip and press down on the container to ensure that the vacuum seal process is taking place. The Home Base will suction out the air until it’s all removed, based on the air left in your container. If there’s a bit of resistance when removing the attachment, you know your seal was complete. . If storing a small amount of food, try using one of the smaller containers. Looking to pre-make a salad for family dinner? Use the larger container and prep in advance!

The vacuum seal bags allow for easy sous-vide cooking, a tip long trusted by professional chefs, which is made easy with the Vacuvita.

I was beyond thrilled with the Vacuvita’s performance after a few tests. Muffins and bread stayed fresher longer, while kale stayed crisp and fresh beyond its typical shelf life.

While the Home Base takes up some countertop space, I’ve found that it actually helps to keep the kitchen more organized, as I put bread and other bakery items that would normally take up space elsewhere in the Home Base.
