everydaygenius-stain-hackIt happens at least once during the holiday season – a big, colorful mess takes place during the most inconvenient time or location. The animated guest who talks with his hands and connects with your glass of red wine – and your new cream-colored lace top. The squabbling nephews who turn a previously pristine tablecloth into a kaleidoscope of colors – and you find it hours later buried under a pile of napkins. Before you know it, you find yourself stepping back from holiday festivities to mop up a big mess, and deal with the after-effects of an unexpected stain.

But Kari Byron and the team from American Express’ Everyday Genius came up big this holiday season with a terrific and timely life hack – “How to Get Stains Out.” One view of this YouTube video, and you’ll stand ready to combat whatever comes your way – or onto your clothing or table linens. Best of all, these stain-removal ingredients are pantry staples, so there’s no running around trying to source unfamiliar products.

Just take three parts dish soap and mix with one part water. Stir it up, pour it on your stain, and rub in – you’ll see below we used this technique on a dishtowel marred by pomegranate juice, red wine, and olive oil.

After rubbing the mixture in thoroughly, soak the stain in a bowl of white vinegar and then toss in your washing machine.

And here’s the towel afterwards!

Depending on your family’s spill track record, it may even make sense to have a batch mixed up and ready to go. Now that’s party planning!

Now that we have stain removal down, here’s a celebratory “Holiday Baubles” recipe from wineglass maker Lolita:

Holiday Baubles Wine Cocktail

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 ounce sparkling wine
  • white wine
  • maraschino liqueur
  • maraschino cherries
  • peppermint swirl candy

Directions:

  1. Fill your glass with sparkling wine and remainder of glass with white wine.
  2. Add a dash of maraschino liqueur.
  3. Top off with a maraschino cherry and peppermint swirl candy for garnish!
