The product review team at Mom Central knows my nephews love reviewing games for the Nintendo DS and, quite honestly, no one here in the office admits to having expert DS gaming skills. So I gladly passed along the copy of Art Academy to Alex and Thomas, ages 9 and 7 ½ respectively, to further ensure my “favorite aunt” status.

To set their expectations, I first told them that Art Academy was not so much a game, like Dragon Quest, as an educational experience. But, they like to draw and do crafts. And they have participated in programs at the local art museum, so I figured they would not disregard it immediately due to the lack of weapons and wizards.

Alex’s and Thomas’ review – too hard?

My younger nephew tried it first. He declared it “too hard” but that he “didn’t read any directions.” My older nephew gave it a more spirited effort, but didn’t understand the nuances of the different drawing tools, like a flat and round paintbrush, or why he needed to know. He said he’s played it a couple of times but it’s not the type of game he will play regularly.

A grownup’s view – better for teens and adults

I researched Art Academy on the Nintendo website to help me understand why it missed the mark with my nephews. After reading the description and the features, as well as combing through some reviews, I deduced that it’s not really an art lesson for kids.

My impression is that a basic knowledge of drawing and materials (e.g., the difference in the effect of a round or flat brush) and even better, a real interest in the experience of taking an art lesson, goes a long way in enjoying Art Academy. The complexity of the game my not be the best match for the attention span and patience of pre-tween boy. In fact, it may prove a better fit for their mom (if she has time!) or for me during my next visit.

Let’s Draw looks to be a great choice for a game that will encourage their creative side. I plan to put it on my holiday shopping list for the boys.

Art Academy is rated E for Everyone.

Maria Guerra is the Senior Vice President of Mom Central Consulting, ‘mom’ to her dog, Farley, and proud aunt of Alex and Thomas—who will gladly review any Nintendo DS games.
