5 stars

This is the original Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann Russian tale of 1816, featuring the brave Nutcracker prince who young Marie Stahlbaun becomes smitten with on Christmas eve, and a thrilling battle with the scary Mouse King. Adventure, courage, kindness, and a blurring of the worlds of dream and reality all swirl together. This original tale from two hundred years ago inspired the Nutcracker ballet.

The story opens on Christmas Eve in as Marie and her brother Fritz eagerly await their godfather Drosselmeier who always bring the children unique, unusual gifts. This year Marie receives a charming wooden nutcracker who comes to life as the clock strikes midnight and must battle the terrifying Mouse King and his army. Maria bravely stands by the Nutcracker’s side until he wins the battle. After winning, the Nutcrackers reveals himself to actually be a handsome prince who the Mouse Queen cursed into Nutcracker form. The spell is broken and loves ensues.

A great immersion in a timeless classic for kids of all ages.
