Visiting the Flicka 3 movie set

Two weeks ago I had the amazing opportunity to be flown to Kelowna, Canada to watch the movie Flicka 3 in production. Not only would I be on a movie set and meet actors including Clint Black (country singer, Flicka 2), Lisa Hartman Black (Knots Landing), and Kacey Rohl (Little Red Riding Hood). I would also be treated to the beautiful scenery of Kelowna!

Manteo Resort and Old Vines

After I was picked up at the airport, I was taken to the gorgeous Manteo Resort. When I walked into my villa style room, I found delicious treats waiting for me along with an amazing view of the water.

I had a couple hours to rest up until my group was taken to a three-course meal at Old Vines, the restaurant at Quail’s Gate. The meal was to die for and the wine only made it that much more mouth-watering. I have to say, my favorite wine was the Pinot Nior with my choice of entrée, the hen. I couldn’t stop eating the chocolate mousse cheesecake, even after I was full. Afterwards, we were whisked back to the Manteo Resort for a good night’s rest before a long day on set.

On the Flicka 3 set

The Flicka 3 set was a site to be seen. We lucked out and had a nice day with sun and not too much wind. The area was perfect for the idea of upscale stables for the Championship riding arena in Wyoming.

The first actor I had the pleasure of interviewing was Kacey Rohl, and she was so sweet! She really seemed to connect with the character she was playing, Kelly. In Flicka 3, Kelly is a former championship rider who gave up the sport when her father passed away, and connects with the mustang horse Flicka to help her find her way back to the arena. What touched me most was I asked Kacey how she prepared for her character. She told us she had many dinners with her own father, and the idea of losing him really helped her understand what sadness Kelly must have experienced.

All in the (Black) family

What I found to be very special about Flicka 3 was that Lisa Hartman Black and Clint Black were working with their daughter, Lily, who plays one of the Champion riders. Lisa thought it would be a challenge, but instead, it made her see that her daughter was stronger than she knew. Plus, watching her perform and succeed really made her proud. Clint agreed that it’s been a blessing to be able to see his family every day and spend time together. He’s also proud of his daughter being able to portray and feel such strong emotions at such a young age. It was so interesting to see the family dynamic.

This was Clint’s first main leading role, however I feel he fit it perfectly. He’s a very charming man and what he has in common with his character in Flicka 3, Toby, is that they both are unique, friendly people, and easy to connect to. He added that working with Kacey was like working with Meryl Streep! Her can-do attitude and determination in portraying her character only made it easier for him to get into his own character.

Flicka 3 producer Connie Dolphin and executive producer Janeen Damian got it right when they talked about Flicka being a magical horse who could mend relationships and bring people together. I just didn’t expect to witness the affect on set.

Back to the resort

After a long day on Flicka 3 set, I got to enjoy one more treat. Manteo Resort co-hosted a delicious three-course dinner for us at their Wild Apple Restaurant and Lounge. After standing outside all day I was ready to eat! I already had a taste of their desserts, but it was nice to try all their flavorful dishes. My favorite was definitely the heirloom tomatoes!

Overall the trip was amazing, and the movie seems like an entertaining film both for young girls and families, instilling great family values. Look for a full review on the movie, Flicka 3, coming in 2012!
