As the mom of a finicky three-year old, mealtimes prove to be quite challenging. From a flat-out refusal to eat what’s put in front of her (“But I want peanut butter and jelly!”) or a negotiation to get her to eat just something (“Two more bites – then you can have dessert!”), getting her to eat a well-balanced meal can be quite exhausting.

What happened to the baby who would eat anything?

When she was first exploring solid foods, Brooke would eat anything I put in front of her. From peas to peaches, tofu to ground turkey, she ate quite a wide array of foods. But then around the age of 18 months, something changed and she started refusing the foods she used to love to eat. Of course, that also came at a time when she started to verbalize her wants and desires more and more – and also started showcasing this newfound independence in other areas of her life, such as bedtime and bath time. It seemed like everything became such an effort – but none so much as mealtime.

Kidfresh to the rescue!

We recently had the opportunity to review a new line of healthy kid’s meals – Kidfresh. Started by parents for parents, Kidfresh is the first 100% natural, healthy food line. They innovate by putting a twist on the classic kid favorites, like mac-and-cheese with hidden veggies instead of any artificial flavors, colors or preservatives. Kidfresh meals are available now in the frozen aisle at supermarkets in the Northeast, and soon will be available nationwide.

A chat with Kidfresh Founder and CEO

I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Matt Cohen – Founder and CEO of Kidfresh. I learned all about the intriguing background of Kidfresh. After wearing different hats in the corporate world, Matt decided to hang up his suits and start up a business with a purpose – help parents (like me!) make mealtime less of a battle by giving kids healthy – yet tasty – food options. As the dad of two, Matt personally can attest to the challenge of getting kids to eat healthy! A brief excerpt from their website:

As a father myself, I decided that we needed more options for all-natural kids’ meals – the kind that are yummy and nutritious for children while convenient for parents.

We did just that, in a real kitchen, with the help of a top chef and a pediatric nutritionist….We decided to broaden our reach and offer our all natural kids meals in supermarkets throughout the country. The result is our new line of frozen Kidfresh meals: a twist on children’s favorite foods, rich in vegetables and without a single drop of anything artificial. Even our packaging meets the highest safety standards with no BPA, no Phthalates nor other potentially harmful chemicals. We use recycled paper, carbon-neutral printing and recyclable containers.

While this is all well and good, the most important thing is that our meals taste great and children love them. It is our passion and we hope you’ll enjoy our meals!

My little food critic is won over!

I was lucky enough to receive several free meal coupons to review Kidfresh with my picky little food critic. I brought her with me to the supermarket and let her pick out her meal of choice….which happened to be the Wagon Wheels Mac ‘n Cheese (with hidden carrots – sshhh!) That night for dinner, after just two short minutes in the microwave, we had a wholesome good-for-you meal, that didn’t taste like a wholesome good-for-you meal!

Brooke instantly liked the Mac ‘n Cheese – no coercion needed! She actually said “yummy – I really like this” – something unheard of these days. The portion size was larger than most kid’s meals, so we were able to safe the rest for the following night. I event caught myself sneaking more than my usual “let-me-test-the-temperature-bite”. It was really good – not too cheesy – but not too bland. For thumbs up from Brooke and me!

Kidfresh products are available in a variety of flavors, including Rainbow Rice + Chicken, Spaghetti Loops Bolognese and Muy Cheesy Quesadillas. Yum! For more information, including how you can download a $1 off coupon, click here.
