Another one of the innovations that caught my attention at CES 2011 was the GE Nucleus. While only about the size of a cell phone charger, the GE Nucleus may soon become the energy command center for the average home.
A wireless home energy monitor, the GE Nucleus with Brillion technology helps bring Smart Grid technology into your home. The Nucleus works with your home’s smart meter to collect and store information about household energy prices and usage in near real-time, helping you monitor your personal energy usage so you can adjust it accordingly to save money.
The Nucleus puts home energy management in your hands, even allowing you to adjust your energy preferences through software on your personal computer. In an effort to give consumers even more control, GE is working to bring this technology to smartphone apps as well. Now, the click of a button on your smartphone will allow you make sure you really did turn off all of the house lights before you left your home.

Taking energy conservation one step further, the GE Nucleus works with your GE Profile Appliances and actually makes decisions for you to help you cut down your energy use, thereby saving money. By monitoring your home’s smart meter, the Nucleus picks up on changes in your variable utility rate and adjusts your appliance use, for example, running the washing machine at a time of day when energy costs are lowest. More than just an energy command center, the GE Nucleus not only enables homeowners to track their energy usage but also helps cut down on energy usage and spending as it interacts with your appliances and automatically responds to changes in your variable utility rate.
