Summer means sunshine, outdoor activities, travel, and a laid-back schedule with kids out of school. Summer also means I want to lose myself in a fun book: a book that’s a page turner, but not so complex I have to gear up my brain to read it. I found the perfect summer read in the novel Born Under a Lucky Moon by Dana Precious.
The book jumps back and forth between 2006 and 1986 as the main character, Jeannie Thompson, tries to explain to her boyfriend why she keeps dodging his “Will you marry me?” question. Jeannie hopes that telling the story of this particular year of her life will explain her reluctance. Her boyfriend, Aidan, won’t take no for an answer and the story from her past continues to unfold. Her “colorful” family seems to get involved in one chaotic event after another, some of them funny, others touching or even scary. Between her Mom, Dad, three sisters and brother there is never a dull moment. Through it all, the message of devotion and togetherness in her family is clear. Jeannie loves them, she just isn’t sure Aidan will feel the same way.
Of course, her present-day life is just as hectic as the story she is sharing. She works in the high-stress, high-powered movie industry which causes her to lose sleep and her sanity. She has a co-worker angling for her job, ridiculously demanding starlets, and a relentless boss that keep her moving in all directions at once. Not only does Jeannie have job stress, she is desperate to keep her family from meeting her boyfriend because she is sure when he does, he will run away from her as fast as he can.
As the book jumped back and forth between time frames, I became more and more involved in both stories. I loved the support the family members showed for each other, especially the siblings. It reminded me of how my sister and will do anything for each other. I also kept rooting for Aidan to prove he wouldn’t be scared off by the stories of Jeannie’s past. For me, the sign of a good book is not wanting it to end and I felt sad as I turned the last pages. I wanted to keep following the story of these fabulous characters. Now I need to hope it will be made into a movie so I can revisit them on the big screen. Actually, as I read the book, I could imagine what a fun movie it would make. If that happens, I will definitely be buying a ticket.
