Portland Roasting Coffee Company roasts premium gourmet coffee with unusual flavors of the world. From far off places like Tanzania and India, their coffee highlights delicious regional flavors and brings them to your cup. Portland Roasting also goes far beyond the beans themselves, making a passionate commitment to their local growers and the communities they live in abroad, all over the globe.
Their love for the exotic in coffee and attentive care to the source and brewing process haven’t gone unnoticed; Roast Magazine named Portland Roasting the 2012 “roaster of the year.” They offer a selection of micro roasted Arabica coffee bean blends, espresso, decaf, and organics either as whole beans or ground.
I tried their Kenya AA French Mission Roast and it tasted sweet, rich, and creamy with hints of citrus and tropical fruits. (Red stone fruit is in it, which I had never heard of!) This coffee helped to mental transport me to another place in the midst of my busy morning schedule, giving me a delicious and energizing boost for the day.
I also appreciate the global commitment the company makes through their partnerships abroad. They give back by devoting resources to community projects in the areas where their collaborators work. To name a few, they have built water wells in East Africa, planted trees in El Salvador, and sent school supplies to an orphanage in Sumatra. They list their projects by region on their website, portlandroasting.com.
It’s amazing to see what they were doing for the people who helped grow and select the Kenya French mission coffee I was drinking. They built solar and combination pumps at two Kenyan schools. Portland Roasting also uses the United Nation’s Millennium Development Goals as their framework for these projects, which loftily promises to eradicate extreme poverty by 2015.
In addition to the projects, Portland Roasting created their own direct sourcing program and invests in stable partnerships with their growers. They also became a carbon neutral company by planting thousands of trees. Through these efforts the company received the Specialty Coffee Association of America Sustainability Award.
Portland Roasting Coffee Company brews up both delicious crafted coffees from the far corners of the world and sustainability aid efforts that benefit communities abroad in need.
