Growing up, baseball was always a big part of my life. I would watch my favorite team on television with my parents and family members, cheering them on. When I got to be a bit older, we would go to games together to enjoy the excitement live. Part of the reason we didn’t do too many baseball excursions when I was a small child was the cost involved with Major League games, as well as the potential boredom a child feels during a nine-inning game.

We recently discovered one of the best ways to experience baseball for families is by attending Minor League games. Ticket prices are affordable (for $20, you can be seated a few rows behind home plate!) and there are often fun themes and activities throughout the game that keep both parents and children entertained – even if we head into extra innings! This was apparent during our most recent outing to the Staten Island Yankees, a minor league team for The New York Yankees that’s really stepping up the overall baseball experiences for families.

As if the excitement of a baseball game alone where you get to see the country’s emerging baseball talent is not enough of an incentive to plan a visit, the Staten Island Yankees have created a season calendar where every game correlates with a special theme. We attended “Back to the ‘80s Night” where the cheerleaders dressed in neon colors, we listened to favorite ‘80s tunes between innings, and after the game, ‘80s icon Tiffany performed a few of her top hits, including “I Think We’re Alone Now.”

The game itself was a lot of fun. The players on both sides made some impressive offensive and defensive plays that kept the entire crowed engaged and cheering. Our affordable seats put us right behind home plate, and we loved seeing the Manhattan skyline and ferry ships in the background.

The food at the stadium was excellent! We noshed on delicious veggie burgers and fries that were fresh, hot and delicious. We also loved to see how local Staten Island restaurants and vendors were onsite, so that game attendees can purchase fresh lobster and drink local Staten Island craft beers. The enhanced dining menu is a new feature this year, and is a far cry from typical game day food. We’d encourage ticket holders to come hungry!

There were so many fun activities for kids throughout the game. Kids were invited on the field for a tug of war between innings (the girls won against the boys!) and got to run the bases at the end of the game with the friendly “Holy Cow” mascot, Scooter.

As adults, we had a fun girls night out at the ballpark, and can see how this activity would be so much enjoyable for families as well. To top it off, we witnessed a Staten Island Yankees victory!
