I would rather endure a root canal or give birth than go shoe shopping with my youngest son. When I get a root canal, I take advantage of pain medications offered to me. When I give birth, I get a magnificent prize at the end. When shoe shopping, pain meds are nowhere in sight, and the only prize I get is my son complaining about his shoes two days later. He cries, “These shoes hurt my feet! I hate these shoes!” accompanied by much whining, of course. Back To School time means shopping for new shoes and I dread it every year.
When the New Balance 688 arrived in the mail for my son to review, my oldest son said, “Are you kidding me? If he likes these, that means they must be some awesome shoes.” It sounded like the Mikey commercial from long ago. “He hates everything!”

My 13-month old son Gavin loves to eat. I mean LOVES to eat. I consider myself lucky as he’ll happily sit in his high chair gobbling up pretty much anything I put in front of him, whereas my nephew (who’s the same age) refuses to sit still and flings his food at my sister! I know this could all change in the months to come as Gavin hones in on his independence and verbalization skills. (Luckily he can’t say “no” yet!) So I need to continue to expand his diet and keep introducing him to new foods. Just because I’m the world’s most boring eater, doesn’t mean my son has to be, right?
Keep it simple
Per the recommendation of my pediatrician, I introduced Gavin to vegetables before fruits so he wouldn’t have an inherent preference to sweet foods. I also tried not to “mask” any of the natural flavors of vegetables with sweeter foods. Luckily this approach has worked! He happily eats peas and green beans just as easily as blueberries and bananas.

This time of year reminds me of the always fun and sometimes out of the norm vacations my family would take during the summer. Sometimes we’d stay closer to home and visit tourist destinations across the United States, but on some occasions we had the opportunity to visit countries in Europe. I definitely attribute these experiences growing up to the wanderlust and love of foreign cuisine I have now.

As a typical three-year old, my daughter Brooke is learning how to define her own voice and express her independence. That especially rings true when it comes to her wardrobe. She insists on picking out her own clothes and getting dressed all by herself, even if that means stripes matching up with polka dots and pink matching up with orange. And what gets me is her determination and strong voice. When I gently suggest a different option that may match better, she insists what she’s picked out is perfect and dismisses my opinion.
