When we hear about new technological advancements, we immediately think about the latest innovations to our tablets, phones, and computers. EnChroma has brought this level of exciting tech innovation past our screens to sunglasses, with dramatic results.
EnChroma’s Digital Color Boost UV450 sunglasses provide a level of brightness, contrast, and clarity of color that had everyone in our office who tried them on all taking one step back and declaring, “WOW!” as they looked out our windows at vibrant green trees, colorful spring flowers, and a strikingly blue sky. Best of all, they combine a high level of protection for our eyes from damaging light, while looking like a super cool pair of fashion forward designer sunglasses.
So what’s going on with these EnChroma’s sunglasses that makes them so striking and powerful? The lenses are constructed with revolutionary optical coating technology that enhances color information and gives a pronounced 3D effect to colorful objects. The EnChroma lenses completely revolutionize what light signals get sent to our brain. The same multi-million dollar machines that make optical parts in satellites and lasers also make Digital Color Boost lenses.
Using a sophisticated mathematical model of how the human eye understands color, EnChroma scientists created precise “cutouts” along the spectrum of light, removing wavelengths of light between colors. Their key discovery: by filtering these wavelengths of light, the color signals sent to our brains get amplified. As photons pass through the hundreds of layers of micro-thin optical coating, the lenses transform wavelengths and adjust how our brains perceive light and color. In contrast, traditional sunglasses darken the view to reduce glare, which in turn reduces color definition.
Next, new research has shown that high-energy blue light contributes to macular degeneration in our eyes, creating blind spots. The EnChroma lenses deflect 100% of UV light and 98% of the damaging blue light.
The EnChroma comes in two other models, the NRG which provides color enhancement for normal color vision and the Cx that correct color blindness. The glasses can be found at EnChroma, and are priced around $379. In my opinion – totally worth it!
