For the Love of Dance!

Magical, captivating, emotional, and comical – represent just four of many adjectives to describe the Boston Ballet’s final performance of the 2014-2015 season, Thrill of Contact. This performance provides a sample platter of dances to suit anyone’s dance taste. If you’ve never attended the Boston Ballet, this is a must-see performance. If you have been many times – this is one not to miss. Or, if you have only been once – definitely make seeing this performance a priority.

From the moment the show began until the final bow, these ballets featured dynamic choreography, riveting music as well as an array of costumes for each of the distinct performances. Thrill of Contact takes the audience on a dance journey beginning with its first piece by George Balanchine’s Theme and Variations. This ballet – filled with simply beautiful costumes – transports the audience to a classical period in time when the Russian Ballet was in its glory.

Concert and fremd represented my two favorite performances during the Thrill of Contact. Both pieces seemed like something I’d never experienced before from a dance performance and not what I thought I would experience at the Boston Ballet. These dances moved beyond ballet and incorporated some modern dance, as well as more storytelling. In the Concert, both comedy and characterizations came through the dance via costumes and the dancers’ unique, whimsical style. Overall, I found this performance simply delightful and pure entertainment.

I also loved fremd by Jeffrey Cirio, which made its world premiere, and means to explore the foreign or strange. What an experience to see a world premiere at the Boston Ballet – and I found the performance incredible. The choreographer set this thought-provoking piece to a beat that, at times, resembled your own heartbeat.

I highly recommend seeing this final performance of the season from the Boston Ballet. In addition, ballet fans attending performances of Thrill of Contact on Saturday, May 23 and Sunday, May 24, will have the chance to take pictures of or get an autograph from several dancers during the second intermission.

This dance journey represents one that you will enjoy every step of the way, and I feel excited witnessing the talent that comes out this world-famous dance company – located in the heart of Boston.
