After a season of cold weather and cloudy skies, we’re eager to rush outside at the first sign of a bright sunny day. When summer officially rolls around, families take this a step further by spending entire afternoons at the pool, or their vacations at the beach. And no one wants to discourage that! But in doing so, it’s important to take proactive steps to protect your family’s skin, and avoid any problems down the road.

Banana Boat ® doesn’t want a lack of sun protection to take away from fun in the sun, so the brand is introducing new products and helpful tips so everyone can have the “Best Summer Ever.” With so many sunscreen brands on the market, we keep going back to reliable favorites like Banana Boat, and plan to have the below new items in our beach bags throughout the summer:

  • Banana Boat® SunComfort™ Clear UltraMist® Sunscreen
  • Banana Boat® Dry Oil Clear UltraMist® Sunscreen with Argan Oil
  • Banana Boat® Sport Performance® Lotion Sunscreen with Powerstay Technology™

In addition to great products that offer plenty of protection, it’s important to be smart about the sun overall, which is why we turned to the experts! Dr. Julie Karen is a mom of three and a dermatologist, so establishing a summer skin protection routine is key for her. As a spokesperson for Banana Boat, she is sharing her insights into why it’s important to utilize sunscreen, and incorporate other steps so you have the Best Summer Ever.

UV-protected clothing like rash guards are very trendy right now, and we love seeing that young kids are embracing them for the beach and pool. Dr. Karen also loves this summer fashion statement, but cautions that relying only on the rash guard to defend against the sun may not be the best practice. Obviously, if the shirt is short sleeved, a layer of sunscreen is needed. Though you may not need to apply as much or as frequently if the shirt has SPF 50, it’s important to check that the garment is “sun certified.” Also, lighter colored shirts can at times offer less protection than darker versions, and anything will lose strength after many washings. Dr. Karen provided a great tip – once you have washed the rash guard or UV-protected clothing a few times, hold it up near the light. If light comes through the fabric, it is losing some of its protection, and doubling up with sunscreen is critical. If the light doesn’t come through, the quality is still good.

When we first saw that Banana Boat was introducing the Dry Oil Clear UltraMist® Sunscreen with Argan Oil, I got flashbacks to lathering on tanning oil and baking in the sun for a nice bronze glow. Were we now going back to that? Because many of us are still dealing with that regret (and the sun damage to boot!). Dr. Karen stressed that oil has a bad reputation, but dry oil and argan oil are actually present to provide a moisturizing effect. They do not detract from the sun protection. As long as the lotion has an SPF of 30 or higher, or is a broad-spectrum lotion, you can feel safe and secure using it, and will actually enjoy better feeling skin due to the enhanced ingredients!

Now that we are all armed with the tools to have the Best Summer Ever, Banana Boat is taking it one step further with the Banana Boat Great Big Family Reunion sweepstakes. One lucky family, and up to 50 of their family members, could win a grand prize of a lifetime with the ultimate vacation. Just don’t forget the sunscreen!
