The school year consists of 180 days. I make lunches for my three boys most days, so that means I create over five hundred sandwiches throughout the school year. By day 20 I’m sick of making my boys’ lunches and they are probably tired eating them. This year, thanks to the boundless recipes in Alison Lewis’s 400 Best Sandwich Recipes, their lunches will be anything but ordinary.

The book is well organized into twelve categories. The chapter titled “Lunch Box” caught my eye immediately and offered great ideas for wraps instead of plain sliced bread sandwiches. My boys would love these. This chapter got my attention, but the one titled “Grilled Cheese Sandwiches” got my mouth watering. The section is seventy pages long! I could make a different grilled cheese sandwich every day for a month with these recipes.

If you classify a sandwich as two pieces of bread with something in between, this book will help you broaden your definition. Contrary to what you may think, the sandwich umbrella envelops wraps, burgers, quesadillas, paninis and more.

As I expanded my idea of a sandwich and leafed through the pages, I found several recipes I want to try immediately. On page 238, the recipe titled “ Bondi Chicken Burger” is named after one of my favorite beaches in Australia. The only thing that could be better about this recipe is if I got to actually eat it on Bondi beach. Chicken marinated in ginger, red pepper, and lemon make this sound like a burger my whole family would enjoy, no matter where we ate it.

Have you ever thought of making a sandwich for dessert? I never did, but the Chocolate Turtle Panini changed my mind. This would be a perfect finish for a meal enjoyed in your back yard or packed up for a picnic. I can’t wait to surprise my neighbors with these treats at our next progressive dinner party.

Reading through these recipes actually made me wish the school year would start sooner to try them out. I know my boys will be excited to open their lunch boxes every day to see what treat is inside.
