When I think of the word algebra, I get instantly nervous and anxious, with memories of seventh grade math class flashing through my head. I just entered junior high school and experiencing all the typical angst, like navigating the halls of a big, overwhelming school and trying to get comfortable with all the social pressures. Then entered algebra, a whole new dynamic in math. You could say I was majorly stressed out! Math never came easy to me, so I had to work extra hard to stay on top of my studies and keep my grades up.
Although over 20 years have gone by since I was in junior high school (yikes!), I’m sure the emotions I went through are still the same. Many kids are experiencing the same nerves and stressful feelings I did as they start the school year and experience algebra for the first time.
Sylvan Learning hopes to help kids (and their parents) feel more at ease and comfortable with algebra with it’s new “Fit 4 Algebra” online tool. This 21-question “check-up” takes about 20-30 minutes for your child to complete and afterwards they will receive comprehensive results targeting any specific gaps they may have in ability. According to the Fit 4 Algebra website:
Students are failing algebra at an alarming rate and this problem reaches far beyond a disappointing report card. Known as a “gateway course,” algebra is a critical stepping-stone to your child’s future. Weak algebra skills could create a troubling domino effect, including lowering ACT®/SAT* scores, limiting access to colleges and ultimately restricting careers. Take the first step to making sure your child stays on track by having your child take the Fit 4 Algebra screener.
Sylvan Learning, in partnership with Let’s Go Learn, is offering a free 21-question Algebra Readiness Check-up to help you determine if your child is ready for the rigors of algebra. Skills in this Check-up were identified based on guidelines from the National Mathematics Advisory Panel as providing the critical foundation for algebra. By assuring the development of these critical skills, you are putting your child on the path to higher-level math success.
