The Boston Ballet: Providing Audiences an Emotional Journey Through Art and Music

I learned over my time living in Boston that this city has so much to offer both residents and visitors. From historical monuments and new-age art installations, to award-winning restaurants and Duck Boat tours, Boston is a melting pot of cultural interests for all ages and backgrounds.

Everyone should enjoy the artistic attraction that combines live orchestral arrangements, beautiful scenery, and amazing physical skill: the Boston Ballet.

The current production, and a powerful representation of time, Third Symphony of Gustav Mahler: A Ballet by John Neumeier, spans the seasons, concluding with an emotional finale. The dancers in the Boston Ballet demonstrate endurance that is truly breathtaking; the action on stage seems non-stop. The strong poses and technical lifts the dancers hold very much resemble the poses in yoga – which in itself proves deserving of a standing ovation. The 1-hour 45-minute performance, sans intermission, amazes as an athletic feat for the Boston Ballet dancers.

As with many of the ballets I’ve seen through the Boston Ballet (aside from the seasonal Nutcracker production), the set design looks minimal but still makes an impact by beautifully framing the dancers’ moments throughout the production. Bright colors correlate perfectly with the theme of each act, helping the audience follow the storyline and making for a visual masterpiece.

The highlight of the night for me came from the orchestra pit. Throughout the night, I felt as though I was surrounded by sound from the Boston Ballet Orchestra, and the inclusion of vocalists brought the symphony as a whole to the next level.

From the colors, to the sounds, to the sights, and everything in between, the Boston Ballet’s production of Third Symphony of Gustav Mahler: A Ballet by John Neumeier feels like a special event audiences will surely never forget. Supplement the night out with dinner and drinks at one of Boston’s highlighted Theater District restaurants and you have the perfect evening to spend with friends, family, and loved ones.
