Turntable.fm, a new way to listen to music

Last week, various spurts of laughter started echoing around the Mom Central Consulting office as members of our team discovered a fun and contagious way to listen to music and share tunes with their friends through turntable.fm.

How turntable.fm works

This new music site takes traditional music sharing and adds a “spin” to it by allowing the users to DJ their own tunes and join virtual rooms to listen to music.

It’s easy to join and create an avatar for yourself. Afterwards, either create your own virtual room and invite your friends to DJ with you or check out other DJ rooms and listen to their music. Each room is allowed five DJs who rotate, playing one song each at a time from the amazingly large selection of streaming music.

All you have to do is search for a song by title, artist, or album title and most likely they will have the song – and yes, all for free! You can also upload your own songs if you don’t find the title in their collection. Once you find your song, add it to your DJ Queue and when it is your turn, your song will play.

Then the fun begins. As a listener, you can either decide whether the song is “awesome” or “lame.” If you choose awesome, your avatar will start dancing to the song and the DJ will receive points, which he can then use to “purchase” new avatars. However, if enough people say the song is lame, the song will skip and the next DJ in line will play a new song.

You are the DJ

Our team at Mom Central created their own room and took turns DJing. We got to know each other’s musical tastes, discovering that many colleagues had favorite bands or songs in common they never knew they had. We also had some good laughs creating theme hours such as show tunes, 90s, or disco.

The chat function within the room allows you to talk with those in your room, making the experience that much more fun. You can use the chat to simply talk with your friends, co-workers, or to request songs. The only downside is that now you may spend more time choosing songs for your DJ queue than getting work done!
