Summer has officially arrived and it is hot hot H-A-W-T here in Texas. The kids are out of school and we keep our days filled with the gym (for me), the pool (for them), and playdates (for both of us). With it being so hot and this mama only able to take so much of the pool with three children, that still leaves us with a lot of time IN THE HOUSE. I'm trying to keep us busy, entertained and not bored.

I found that when we are at home on a hot day with nothing to do, we tend to snack more and move less. No es bueno! I want to teach my children to make nutritious choices and that movement can and is fun, that being active is the way to go.

Weight Watchers has come out with a new book, Eat! Move! Play!, that addresses these issues. Their book focuses on the family unit, understanding that we moms play a HUGE role in the food choices our children make and how active (or NOT active) our children live.

Keeping your family fit

In addition, the book presents five simple rules that all families can live by for keeping the household fit:

  • Supplies quizzes and self-assessments for parents to understand their parenting styles better
  • Explains what a healthy weight is for a child, while providing advice on how to talk to children—and their pediatricians—about healthy weight and nutrition
  • Delivers hundreds of doable tips, ideas, and checklists to help parents implement the best practices for eating healthier and moving more
  • Includes more than 75 kid-friendly recipes that encourage children—from toddlers to school-age to help out in the kitchen.

Weight Watchers Eat! Move! Play! shows that when followed consistently, just a few simple household rules and practices are all it takes to get and keep your family living a healthy, active lifestyle.

Just today, while the kids were wrapping up with a movie on the TV, I was browsing through this book for ideas to get us moving and having fun, around the house. Although this idea was all mine, it was inspired while browsing this book.

As soon as the movie ended, I turned on the “excited mommy voice” and told my kids that we were going to run and play ball around the house. They looked at me funny for about two seconds and then they made a mad dash to grab every ball we own. They proceeded to dash around our house kicking, throwing and dunking baskets into imaginary goals. 

They had a blast and so did I.  Laughing, giggling, and sweating!  Together.  All of us.

Anyone that has a relationship of any sort with a child can gain useful knowledge from Eat! Move! Play! like grandparents, aunts/uncles, caregivers, etc.  It gives practical, easy to follow activities and recipes for the entire family to follow.  Not only that, it talks sensibly to us moms about our children and how to positively influence them.

  1. We head to the pool every night after dinner. We have fun and stay cool playing water games together…all while getting in extra activity points!

    We take a family walk after dinner a few night a week, and I organize dance parties in the living room on Friday nights (my husband doesn’t enjoy the 80s musicfest nearly as much as the kids and I do, though).

    We plan to swim as often as we can.

  4. We have begun to take daily family walks first thing in the morning. On days when it is too rainy or just too hot, we wait a few hours and then go walk at the mall.

    We open the pool and we swim almost every day – that helps a lot! If the nights are cool enough before bed, we also take an evening stroll and admire the fireflies!

    My family tries to take walks as often as possible. We also enjoy swimming. My girls & I are thinking about beginning a workout/dance video session a couple days per week to give us something fun and fit to do in the evenings.

    We got all the kids bikes and scooters (and all the proper padding). They are having a blast this summer!

  11. I have a membership at the YMCA which offers tons for the kids. We also stay active by swimming. If its raining outside, we can use the indoor pool at the gym. Its a great workout and the kids don’t even realize that they are exercising!

  14. We have started going to swim a few times a week, and we also work out at home to the wii fit or exercise bike!

    I have a toddler and we are moving more by dancing and rough housing. It’s fun for both of us.

    My kids love to ride bikes, swim & jump on the “jumpee” all summer long. I am not kidding when I tell you that by 7:30am we are outside riding bikes! They also love blueberry muffins and eggs – so it would be nice to spice up their palates with some new foods!

    This summer we started a new routine! As soon as we get done eating in the evening we head outside! We have a net in our backyard to play volleyball or badmitton, we walk or sometimes ride bikes! It is so much better than sitting around in front of the TV!

    This would be a great book for my daughter’s family. Unfortunately, the computer and the Wii take center stage most of the time. This would get everyone motivated to get out an going. Thanks for the opportunity.

    I plan to PLAY(whatever the kids want to do) as much as possible and stop looking at it as exercise and more as RECESS!Whether that is throwing the ball around or rolling down a hill in the grass or even just running around playing hide and seek.

    My kids are taking swimming lessons and we are going to try to get them out to practice. I also let them run around outside as much as possible and we recently got them all bikes. They love being outside.
