The Truth About Men
By: Howard J. Fox
Think of a definition of what a “good” man is? How about a “successful” man? These inherent definitions have changed since the days when men roamed the Earth beating drums and using crude paints on cave walls. Though our core values have stayed the same, the ways we attempt to exist as a “good” and “successful” man have certainly evolved. Men’s coach, lawyer, and author Howard J. Fox (no relation to Michael, I’m pretty sure on this) created The Truth About Men as a handbook to help men become better husbands, fathers, and income-earners. Fox also highlights ways to lead a more balanced life and be more successful romanticly.
Fox explains the key to becoming a good man is support from other men, and touts the benefits of attending retreats and weekend sessions exclusively for guys. The ‘Men’s Movement’ is not dead, and advice on family matters (rare in the past) has become the forefront of conversations between men. Fox delves into generally taboo topics between men like listening to women, making commitments, taking responsibility for fathering, and even keeping romance alive in relationships. Fox explains that although women generally act as support systems for their men, an even more affective practice is venting those emotions in a masculine environment to your Y chromosomal brothers.
The Truth About Men desires to act as a measuring-stick for true manliness, but also tackles the difficulty of being a man. Fox attests that the way our own father’s raised us very much influences how we act as fathers ourselves. Fox cites avoiding toxic emotions and creating masculine support as key elements to being a good man.
Fox aims to teach men to face life’s challenges, keep an open heart and achieve personal growth all while supporting each other instead of competeing. Whether it is inner strength, support from a spouse, or much need cheerleading from some other guys going through the same issues – being a good and succesful man takes a lot of heart and a whole lot of encouragment.
